Post How old is the West Ealing milestone?
on: January 29, 2012, 16:59

My dad is staying with us in West Ealing, and we went by the milestone outside Bulvinos house today. He wanted to know how old it was and who put it up.

I expect it's 19th century, but Google searches have turned up nothing? Anyone else have any insights as to its origins and age?

All I know is that it's due for renovation which is being funded by the Walpole Ward Forum

We are currently refurbishing the milestone for Ealing Council. Only 50% was visible above ground probably due to build up of the pavement level. On removing the object we found it was made by JJ Barrett Foundry in 1836. The milestone will be replaced in pristine condition in a couple of weeks.

I first raised my concerns about this some years ago as it was so badly cracked and damaged. I heard it had been hit by a motorcycle! I noticed it had disappeared a week or so back and I'm delighetd to hear it is being professionally restored. There's one on Hounslow Heath that is in need of a good clean up while you're at it, no cracks this time.

Thanks for the update - that's good to know. I had no idea it as old as 1836!

From the bus it looks like new. I'm glad it has been restored and not replaced.
