Minutes of WEN Committee meeting on Saturday 12th June, 2010 at The Drayton Court Hotel Present: Allison Franklin Diane Gill Sally Greenbrook Chris Gilson David Highton (Chair) Eric Leach
Apologies: Gill Adams Sarah Judic Andrew Cazalet Nick Greenhalgh
1.Green Man LaneEstate (GMLE) No new Planning Applications have been submitted and no information has been forthcoming on their drafting. WEN has been unable to glean what the new Labour Council's attitude is to the GMLE development. New Elthorne Labour Councillor Yoel Gordon enthusiastically contacted WEN on May requesting an early meeting, but now the contact seems to have gone dead. Diane has expressed her interest in joining the stakeholder group being formed by A2Dominion with regards the Community Café, but there has been no response to her approach. The GMLE web site content has remained static now for two months and emails sent to it receive no reply. 2. Sherwood Close (Dean Gardens Estate) David recently attended a badly organised residents'meeting. At this meeting Ealing Council said it had learned a lesson from the GMLE project and wanted to involve local stakeholders earlier in the project. Developers have been written to with a view to finding out who might like to bid for the development contract. David to obtain a copy of this invitation to tender. Action: David 3. Daniels The NHS has given up trying to set up a Care Centre at the new Daniels. Daniels claim they are looking for new tenants to use the space. 4. Book Swap The scheme is working well at West Ealing Station. A user has topped up the book stocks! Chris and Sally are now planning to extend the service to Northfields Station. Action: Sally & Chris 5. Book Club Working well. Attendance around 8 people. 6. Hanwell Carnival Diane co-ordinating the WEN presence. She is producing a WEN leaflet. David will provide WEN membership forms. Stand manning rota produced for 19 June. Chris and Sally offered the use of their gazebo. Diane to contact Nick re producing a big map print out for people to mark up fruit availability. On sale on the stand will be Rhubarb and Ginger jam, Pear and Ginger chutney, Chilly chutney, and Elderflower cordial. Action: Diane 7. Abundance Abundance won an award at the Observer Ethical Awards! Write up in The Guardian this week listed the WEB Abundance blog - and we had 85 hits on the site on 11 June.
8. Lido Junction Nothing to report.
9. Regeneration Melbourne Avenue The repaving almost complete. Traders have suffered during building works. Luckhurst's will get a new shop front.
Dean Gardens ‘remodelling' still not complete after 8 months. Adult gym equipment has been installed by the basketball board. There are no instructions for using the equipment. Each new tree cost £500 apparently and the whole exercise is reported to have cost £157,000. 10. Arts Project Ealing Council contracted Rosie Cann of Pop-up Space to contact landlords of empty shops with aview to putting the empty space to some good community use. She had some response and we're awaiting details.
11. Craft Market WEN favours using St James Avenue area for a market but the Council wants it to be Melbourne Avenue. Now the annual St James Craft event may not take place this year. WEN thinks the loss of this annual community event would be tragic. Allison will pursue the idea of WEN adopting this event and running it annually at St James Church. Action: Allison
12. SEC Dickens Yard Judicial Review still mired in legal argument. Haven Green protection as a ‘Village Green' is progressing well. No news about Glenkerrin's future intentions with Arcadia or on Ealing Council/Empir Cinemas intention with the derelict cinema site.
